Optimized for VPS!

Posted by Norman under: announcements .

Finally and after 2 months of using Virtuozzo containers to host shared accounts we got email from one of our resellers asking why he see “Optimized for VPS” sign on the header of his cPanel!

Answer is simple, we no longer host our shared and reseller hosting accounts on plain dedicated server setup, instead we host the shared hosting accounts on Large Virtuozzo Containers hardware nodes.

That means more resources available to each website:

  • cPanel for VPS consume less memory than cPanel for regular servers.
  • Because we deal with Virtuozzo node as 2 or 3 Dedicated Servers, RAM available for virtuozzo node is 2 or 3 times the RAM available for regular dedicated Server, but the share of shared account of RAM will be much more than the share of RAM available to hosting account in regular server!! … let we calculate it ..
Compare regular dedicated server that hosts 400 accounts and have 4 GB of RAM with Virtuozzo node hosts 3 Containers, each host 400 accounts and 12 GB of RAM ..

    Regular server:
    RAM for hosting account = 4 GB / 400 accounts = 10 MB

Virtuozzo node (3 of Virtuozzo Containers):
    RAM for hosting account = 12 GB / 1200 accounts = 10 MB

Are they Equal? No .. because in Virtuozzo, we can setup Soft and Hard Limit of RAM to each Container, so we are telling Virtuozzo node to allow Minimum of 4 GB RAM to each Container, PLUS, if a Container demands more RAM and node have RAM available, then node will temporary assign more RAM to that container.
So after weeks of testing, we can say That each Container virtually have 6-8 GB RAM at any point of time available to consume!
That’s 50% - 100% more RAM available for each shared hosting account.

  • You can say the same thing about CPU usage, we use more powerful processors for Virtuozzo nodes than the regular dedicated servers.

And better performance to the whole Container, the numbers of accounts per server above is just an example, in production servers, this numbers of accounts per server can be much more, depend on many factors .. but disregarding how powerful the server is, large number of accounts per server can cause a lot of problems, so in any way, the number of accounts in Virtuozzo Container will be much less than number of accounts in Regular dedicated servers and that will lead to:

  • Smaller number of hosting accounts means smaller configuration files on server, faster service reload and better access time.
  • Faster periodic functions, like Daily Backup, Stats and more.

This is not everything, the flexability of Virtuozzo Containers gives a lot of options, so stay tuned.
